NEW Highland Fling

LEGEND OF THE HIGHLAND FLING

Highland (Scottish) dance was originally performed in the military by males to demonstrate their strength, stamina, and agility. Today, Highland dance is performed all over the world by both males and females, and is a way of preserving the Scottish culture. The legend of the Highland Fling has two stories. The first is of a young boy who saw a Stag on the Hill top “dancing.” The boy started imitating the Stag’s antlers with his hands and curved arms which is why in Highland dances you see the dancers bring their middle finger and thumb together to form the Stag. The other piece of this dance comes from warriors dancing on top of their shields as a victory dance after battle. The Targe is a Scottish shield made of leather with a spike in the center. The Highland Fling is danced in 1 spot representing when the warrior would dance on top of their Targe.

Feldenkrais – 60 minutes – Thursdays 6:15-7:15pm – ages 12+ - An Awareness Through Movement® lesson offers a respite from a focus on effort and results to a focus on pleasure and process, which ultimately leads to an improvement in both daily functioning and artistic performance. A lesson consists of a series of movements each repeated many times and accompanied by specific attention to parts of the body. Through oral instruction, the teacher guides both the students’ movements and attention. Typically in the beginning of a lesson, movements are small and slow. As the lesson progresses, students are often guided to incrementally increase the range of their movements and, occasionally, experiment with speed changes. The atmosphere of a lesson is one of non-judgmental curiosity and inner focus. General benefits include a decrease in pain and restriction and an increase in the coordination, flexibility, balance, and pleasure of movement. Dancers and other performers typically experience an increase in creativity, articulation, expression, and intentionality in movement. Beyond the effects on movement, after a lesson students typically feel rejuvenated, refreshed, and in a more peaceful frame of mind.  $44/month OR $11 drop-ins OR punch card
